Panhellenic Recruitment Our school year begins with "Work Week" (the week we prepare for formal rush). This occurs in early August. Formal Rush at the University of Oklahoma lasts 4 days, with Bid Day occurring on the fifth day. Learn more about Panhellenic Rush by visiting the OU Panhellenic web site.
The Big Red Rally The school year commences with a university wide pep rally at the stadium to kick off OU football season! The Thetas always participate in the spirit competition.
Football Season This brings many visitors to our house (and not to mention our parking lot for those coveted spaces) for our traditional game day brunches. On home game days we open our doors to welcome family and friends to the Theta house before the OU football game at Owen Field.
Pledge Retreat Our new members take a weekend off to get to know one another better. This is basically a gigantic slumber party of nearly 70 girls somewhere outside of Norman! Throughout the weekend each of the other pledge classes drop by to visit and eat with the new members.
OU/TX Weekend and the Bevo Bar-B-Q With the Friday preceding the OU vs. UT football game in Dallas considered our "Fall Break" from classes, the Thetas celebrate this OU tradition to the fullest. The Thursday night of this week our chapter hosts one of our most popular annual date parties- the Bevo Bar-B-Q. (Bevo being the University of Texas mascot.) Friday, just about the entire town travels to Dallas for the weekend to attend the long-awaited "Red River Shootout."
Big Sis / Lil Sis Common among all OU sororities, our chapter participates in this favorite night of sisterhood. Our new members learn the identity of their "Big Sister" (mentor) after a scavenger hunt throughout the house and are showered with gifts! The actual date of this event is always a surprise! This pajama party ends with a trip to the OU fraternity houses by the freshmen and sophomores performing impromptu "serenades!"
Homecoming The Kappa Alpha Theta's consistently participate in Campus Activities Council sponsored activities the week of Homecoming. Paired with a fraternity, we compete in several events including a blood drive, canned food drive, window painting competition, thematic skit during the "Walkabout," float building, and of course the Homecoming Day Parade, to name a few!
Initiation After a ten week pledge ship, our new members officially become members of Kappa Alpha Theta. A different activity occurs each night of Initiation Week in which we are reminded of our fraternity's ideals and given the opportunity to celebrate our sisterhood with one another. The week culminates with Friday night's initiation ceremonies, in which our new members learn the secrets and ritual of our fraternity.
Dad's Day Weekend and University Sing Teaming with another fraternity, our new members perform a miniature musical in the University Sing competition. This OU tradition occurs on Dad's Day Weekend, when families travel to Norman for the home football game (and of course another game day brunch at the Theta house!) and to see OU students sing and dance their finest in the U-Sing show. We are most excited about our awards this year with the members of Lambda Chi Alpha. Our act was awarded First in Show and Crowd Favorite!
KATS Making Tracks for CASA Our major philanthropic event last semester was a 5K run held in November. All proceeds raised from entry fees from the run were donated to the local chapter of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), Theta's national philanthropy. To learn more about entering the race or if your business is interested in sponsoring the run next year, you can contact our service chair.
Thanksgiving Holidays! Officer Elections Theta terms of office run from January through December. In late November our nominating committee slates the 40 new officers that assist in chapter operations!
Kite and Key Another favorite Theta party, Kite and Key is our annual formal with the members of Kappa Kappa Gamma.
Finals Week and Christmas Holidays! Spring Semester Commences Classes typically begin the first Monday of January, followed by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday from school.
Founder's Day We celebrate Theta Founder's Day on January 27. Theta is the first Greek letter fraternity known among women, and was founded in 1870. Learn more about Theta history.
Spring Parties Our chapter will host 2-3 date parties the spring semester. Every few years the Thetas host a semi-formal called "Pansy Pile" with the members of Delta Delta Delta (as both sororities share the pansy motif). Every four years, coinciding with the Olympics, our chapter has a date party with the members of Pi Beta Phi entitled "Go For the Gold." A favorite Theta tradition is the thematic "Be There..." party, typically occurring in April. With past themes such as "Be There in Bell Bottoms," "Be There at the Races," and "Be There Aloha," and "Be There at the Casinos!" Children's Miracle Network Dance Marathon At least 10% of every sorority and fraternity chapter is encouraged to participate in the university-wide event. All proceeds from this 24 hour lock-in to benefit the Children's Miracle Network.
Spring Break! Legacy Night Every year we host a slumber party for our legacies that are juniors or seniors in high school and are considering attending the University of Oklahoma. A Theta legacy means a young woman's mother, sister, or grandmother was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta. This event allows our legacies to get to know some of the women in our chapter and gives them a better idea of what sorority life is like.
Theta Tennis Tournament Our major philanthropic event for the spring semester is an annual tennis tournament, with all proceeds benefitting our national philanthropy CASA. CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates. All the Thetas help out our Service Chair in running this massive event at the OU Tennis Courts. If you are interested in entering the tournament or sponsoring, please contact our Service Chair.
Sooner Scandals and Mom's Day Weekend Like Dad's Day Weekend and University Sing, this is the spring semester's weekend equivalent. Many of the Greek houses host Mom's Day activities, such as a brunch and style show. Sooner Scandals is the university-wide musical competition sponsored by Campus Activities Council. Fraternities and sororities, as well as other campus groups, pair up to rehearse and perform a ten minute musical act. The Thetas are proud to claim the first place award in 1996 with their James Bond act "Fistful of Diamonds" and second place award in 1997 with "Top Gun!"
Greek Week Panhellenic and Interfraternity Council sponsor "Greek Week" every spring. Paired with a fraternity, we celebrate being Greek, perform community service activities, and compete in games and activities.
Greek Preview Day This Panhellenic/IFC sponsored day in the spring allows high school students considering attending OU a chance to tour our homes and meet sorority and fraternity members. This gives prospective students and rushees a better idea of what "being Greek" is all about. For more information, visit the Panhellenic web site.
